Modern garage doors have two safety mechanisms:
Two sensors mounted 4-6 inches above the floor on either side of the door create an invisible beam. When anything breaks this beam while the door is closing, the door immediately reverses.
If the door contacts an object while closing, pressure sensors detect the resistance and reverse the door's direction.

Monthly Photo-Eye Test: 1. Open the garage door 2. Place a 2x4 board flat on the ground in the door's path 3. Press the close button 4. The door should reverse upon touching the board
Sensor Alignment Test: 1. Close the door 2. Wave a broom handle through the sensor beam 3. The door should stop or reverse immediately
